Top Spots for Early Season Skiing in North America

For ski enthusiasts who can’t wait for peak season, early-season skiing is the perfect way to kick off winter. While many resorts wait for consistent snowfall, some high-altitude and snow-reliable destinations open as early as late October or early November. Here are the best places in North America to get those first tracks in:

1. Arapahoe Basin, Colorado
Nicknamed "A-Basin," this resort is often one of the first to open in the U.S., thanks to its high elevation (13,000 feet) and advanced snowmaking. Expect limited terrain at first, but it’s a great place to shake off the rust. They are known for having the longest ski season in Colorado, usually operating from October until June.

2. Keystone Resort, Colorado
Keystone typically opens in early November and offers solid snowmaking infrastructure. It’s family-friendly and has night skiing, making it a great early-season option.

3. Mammoth Mountain, California
Mammoth’s elevation and generous early snowfalls often lead to a November opening. It also boasts one of the longest seasons in North America, sometimes running into July.

4. Banff/Lake Louise, Alberta
In Canada, Banff’s resorts (Sunshine Village and Lake Louise) benefit from cold temperatures and early snow. Sunshine often opens in early November with stunning alpine views.

5. Mount Snow, Vermont
On the East Coast, Mount Snow is usually among the first to open. It has a powerful snowmaking system, ensuring early coverage despite variable weather.

Just be sure to check snow reports before you go—early season conditions can vary. With fewer crowds and lower prices, it’s a great time to enjoy the slopes before the peak winter rush.
